Here's a topic I'd like a few views on...
Am I alone in not warming to the motto chosen to grace the Ulverston sign perched by the Shell garage on the A590? It's the one that periodically says 'Welcome to Ulverston - the little town with the big heart'. True enough but a bit twee. And will it really encourage visitors to stop and peruse our cobbled streets? Surely we can do better. How about 'Ulverston - the little town with the big monument'? OK, it's a bit childish but it would at least encourage the mischievous to stop and ask townsfolk for directions to their big monument. Or how about the direct marketing invoked by the slogan 'Ulverston - Cafe Capital of Cumbria'. As Bill Bryson observed, Britons are united in their enthusiasm for hot beverages and would readily stop for a cuppa. Any other suggestions on a blog post please. If there are enough 'little town big heart haters' out there we could petition the town council for a caption change.
I think jench has a point. But then perhaps any motto would be 'twee'
Hoad Monument, Hoad Monument, Hoad Monument - does it have to be in nearly every p[icture of Ulverston?
Who says it's worth renovating?
