For a friendly informal pub that is quiet enough to have a chat and not be blasted out with sound try The Old Friends in Soutergate
the Rose and Crown does food at a modest price.
Occasionally good music.
The Kings Arms in King St has a good atmosphere when there's football on especially when Liverpool play Man United! Good friendly rivalry between local supporters of both teams
The Farmers Arms is brilliant for good beer and good food, slightly expensive for food, but huge portions and the quality is excellent...I have never been disappointed, and the staff are truly welcoming no matter how busy they are.
